We
have conducted panel discussions at various mystery conferences and
libraries.
Some of our more popular panels include:
THE DEVIL’S IN THE DETAILS
Have you ever found a glaring
mistake in a book? Something about a character, setting, or plot that
makes you shake your head in dismay? Join the Mavens for an hour of
show-and-tell as they explain how research helps them avoid obvious
errors and subtle snafus in their mysteries. Hear about real life
experiments and see examples of research material used to make their
stories credible.
50
WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LOVER…DEAD!
From poison to pickaxes, the
means mystery writers use to kill off their characters are many and
varied. The Mavens discuss unusual plot devices and methods of murder in
this interactive program that encourages audience participation.
BALANCING
ON ONE HIGH HEEL
How do authors balance their
writing careers with other jobs and life choices? The Mavens describe
how they juggle two jobs each while making time for family, friends, and
other obligations. Prepare for a lively discussion of personal styles
and the writing process as the Mavens discuss how becoming published has
changed their lives.
THE
ROMANTIC SIDE OF MYSTERY: SEX AND THE SLEUTH
Engage in conversation with the
Mystery Mavens as they explore the role of romance in mystery. Does sex
equal romance, or is the chase more important than the catch? What
happens when the plot becomes secondary to the sleuth's love life? Can
marriage kill off a series? And finally, how much romance do readers
want in their mysteries?
STEPS
TO WRITING IT RIGHT
1)
Plotting the book: going from synopsis to outline to
finished
manuscript.
2)
Setting the hook: grabbing the reader’s attention.
3)
Realism: internal and external conflict in characters,
dialogue,
and setting.
4)
Pacing: creating tension that moves the story forward.
5)
Research: getting your facts right.
6)
Red herrings and clues: playing fair with the reader.
7)
Wrapping it up: satisfying conclusions for both author and
reader.
